From McNally's Long Strange Trip

"...she(Donna) moved to San Francisco, going to work at Union Oil processing credit cards. Many of her friends at Union Oil were Dead Heads, and she went along with them one night in October 1970 to Winterland. ..and after the Dead finished, she went home and sat in her apartment saying, "'How did they do that, how did they do that? That's what I want'... it was spiritual.""

That's great. It ends abruptly, and there's no way it would be just a 5-minute interview ... wonder where the rest of it is! I suppose we've all heard the story, but it's nice to hear it from the lady herself.

I guess the Union Oil is just that it's no longer around, so it's one of those things that brings up images of the era, like Sohio or Humble Oil with that "Put a Tiger in Your Tank" commercial.

She seems very down to earth. And the southern accent; isn't that a generational marker, really? (Like being named Donna Jean? Or Betty, Barbara, Shirley, etc.) It seems to me that not many people acquire regional accents anymore. Too much influence of TV, etc. Maybe a southerner could correct me on that, though.

I can't believe women ever sat around while their husbands/boyfriends referred to them as "the old lady." And it was "hip," too. That's DEFINITELY an age marker.
